***BUTLER, HOWARD RUSSELL (1856-1934 Princeton, New Jersey) Administrative building of Columbian Exposition of 1893, framed oil on canvas, signed lower right H.R. Butler, approximately 30'' x 24''; Provenance - This painting was originally purchased and exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago of 1893. That year Howard Russell Butler exhibited three paintings with the lot numbers 233, 234 and 235 of the exhibition. One of these three paintings won the silver medal for best oil on canvas of the exhibition. The name of the winning painting is unknown. This painting was most likely 234 or 235 but which one is uncertain, back of frame bears number 217, however we do not believe this was the original frame for this painting. Number 217 refers to a painting by Walter Francis Brown. We are unsure if this frame was switched with that artist painting or was added on later. Many of the buildings depicted in this painting were destroyed in a Chicago Union riot. Paintings such as this are the few historical reminders that these buildings actually existed. Information comes from the official directory of the World's Columbian Exposition in list of US Exhibitors. This piece comes with original admission papers with seal for entrance into 1893 Columbian Exposition. This painting comes from the family of the original purchasers.
