Telling Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sears Roebuck & Co., Sears purchased the painting in 1986 for $6,200 from Helene Mazelow (Helene Arthur Galleries 3463 Young Street Toronto, Canada, Helene Mazelow worked as Director of the Sears Vincent Price Gallery in Chicago and as art consultant to many prestigious U.S. based firms responsible for excellent corporate art collections in New York, Chicago, California and other smaller American centers), approximately 30" x 25". CONDITION: Remnants of a signature were found, varnish removed, cleaned and revarnished in 1985, the surface of the work is finished with synthetic varnish. This top coat of varnish was applied with a brush over a layer of older varnish which was most likely original, the older varnish has yellowed with age, retouched paint can be scene under UV inspection, painting comes with fifty-six page interview with artist Edward Dufner from 1927. ***19TH CENTURY ENGLISH RENAISSANCE STYLE SECRETAIRE BOOKCASE Made from English white oak, built by Herter Brothers for the Potter Palmer Mansion, during the 1880's, the upper section fitted with flat cornice over panel decorated with floral and fruit garland and cherubs, centered with plaque "1669" over two blind doors having carved panels depicting hunting dogs and elk, over two half drawers (when removed reveals hidden compartment), flanked by carved dolphin figures with cubby holes, mirrored doors and cherubic term figures below, the lower section having slanted writing surface, over nine drawers. Stamped Palmer 75852 on rear panel (it was common for Herter Brothers not to sign commissioned pieces but to be stamped with customer name and commission number). This piece was purchased in the 1950's when the Palmer Mansion was being razed. Comes complete with original gas light fixtures, locks signed by G.
